Course Overview & Exchanges

RACE START & LOCATION
START TIME: 7:00 AM
LOCATION: Great Western Trailhead*
*The course will start at the top of South Fork, just outside the gates of Trefoil Girl Scout camp. NO CARS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE START AREA, other than those of staff and volunteers. If you park there, you will be towed or ticketed at your expense.
The first relay runner can utilize the Bag Drop at the start if they don’t want to carry items on the course. See details on the bag drop.
EXCHANGE POINTS
Each runner will run their leg(s) from each exchange point, with the last runner crossing the finish line. Your entire team is also welcome to cross the finish line together. (More details below.)
Please keep in mind that there will be teams of 2, 3, and 4 runners. Each team may have participants running different distances than the other teams. Don’t panic, and please do not tell them that they must exchange runners.
Legs are determined by exchange points and not by mileage. There are no restrictions on which legs can be assigned to a runner. For example, a team of 2 could trade off at each exchange zone, or they could run 2 legs and then exchange. This is up to your team to decide!
There will NOT be any exchanges done at non-exchange zones. If this happens, your team will be disqualified. There will be timing markers that each assigned runner must cross at each exchange zone. Do NOT exchange runners at a location that has not been designated as an exchange zone. This is for your safety and for the safety of others. There will be a way to be able to track your runner throughout the course, but please be aware that due to signal and pace, it may not be 100% accurate.
Do NOT inhibit other teams. Please be courteous of all participants in the exchange zone and be mindful that there are runners who are participating in the full marathon distance.
Obey all posted signs on the course, aid stations, exchange zones, and public areas.
RULES OF EXCHANGE AREAS:
- Leave no garbage
- Be respectful
- Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t stand in the path of the runners.
- While there is water and gels for the participants on the course, please do not refill your water bottles or take gels for your team. Gels can be purchased at the expo or at local retailers.
Marathon Relay Race Legs
LEG 1
Marathon Start → Canyon Glen
Approx. 7.4 Miles
After riding the bus, you will start at the Great Western Trailhead at the top of South Fork Canyon. You’ll begin your race and enjoy a fast, beautiful opening segment beginning in upper Provo Canyon and heading down toward the Provo River Parkway Trail. You’ll pass through Vivian Park and merge onto the Provo River Trail. Next stop…Canyon Glen.
LEG 2
Canyon Glen → Exchange Park
Approx. 7.8 Miles
Once arriving at Canyon Glen, Runner 1 will stay on the trail through the backside of the park until arriving at the Westerly side. To get to the exchange zone, take the path on the Western side of the parking lot towards the bridge. It is the closest part of the trail to the parking lot.
As the team’s runner starts Leg 2, your team/driver will walk back to the public parking area. (Please don’t try to get your vehicle through the fences.)
After the runner leaves Canyon Glen, they will continue on the path to the exit of Provo Canyon, staying on the trail under the Orem 800 N hill and continuing all the way down University Avenue. There are many streets to navigate, and there will be a police presence. Please use caution and pay attention to all course flaggers and officers. Once you have dropped back into the neighborhoods, you’ll go past Macey’s and smell the yummy Chick-fil-A… but don’t stop there! One more bridge to go under and you’ll arrive at Exchange Park.
Leg 3
Exchange Park → Epic Sports Park
Approx. 5.8 Miles
Nestled just after the Parkway trail goes under Columbia Avenue in Provo, not too far from the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. It’s just west through the neighborhoods, so please be respectful. The trail goes right through the park, and the parking lot is small. Here is where patience and preparation come into play. Please watch for all pedestrians, obey all posted signs, and don’t get a parking ticket!
After leaving this little neighborhood you’ll be heading toward Utah Lake. But first, you will need to make a quick cross of Geneva Road, we will have flaggers there to assist you, but please be aware of your surroundings. Once you come to Fort Utah Park, you’ll cross over Geneva Road and venture out toward the Provo Airport along Lakeview Parkway. Please be careful in this area as the majority of the time you’ll be running on the shoulder of the road. However, you’ll still be able to dream of your next vacation with airplanes nearby. Eventually you’ll make a few more turns and come to the Epic Sports Park.
Leg 4
Epic Sports Park → Finish Line
Approx. 5.2 Miles
Now it’s time for the final stretch — a simple, less than 10k stroll to the finish. You’ll head back to the Provo River trail and join up with the 5K course. If you’re fast, you may run into a few 5K runners and folks out fishing (make sure to say hi). The great news is that you are finishing at Utah Lake State Park, home of the Runtastic Frigid 5K.
As you cross the finish line with epic glory, hold your head high that you completed the inaugural Runtastic Marathon! And yes, you can run across the finish line as a team! Now come get a banana — you earned it!
Finish
Wanna all run through the finish line as a team for one epic group pic? Have the team meet up when your last runner comes through the gate that leads to the state park and enters onto the asphalt.
- Time is recorded when the tracking band crosses the plane of the finish line.
- The finish chute should remain clear of non-competing athletes. Please encourage your spectators to stay clear of the finish line. Celebrate with your cheer squad outside of the participant area.
- Post-race food and drinks (like chocolate milk), this is for YOU, the runner, and not for spectators. We will have food trucks or snacks available for purchase.
Aid Stations
Redmond Re-Lyte, water, porta-potties, and a first aid kit will be available at each station. Look for Re-Lyte on the first table and water on the second.
[table id=90 /]
* Porta-potties are .5 miles before Aid Station C
The marathon course is supported for 6 hours and 30 minutes from 7:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Police, directional cones, porta-potties, and Aid Station support will not be available after 1:30 PM. Please plan accordingly.
Rules, Competition, & Safety
- This is NOT a competitive relay. Awards will be given to the top 3 teams, with the winning team receiving a trophy engraved with their team’s name to go down in history!
- Exchange zones, although marked, will not have a volunteer to ensure that you stay in the zone. You should make the exchange in the area so that the individual marathon runners (not in relay teams) will not have to stumble over you.
- It is your responsibility as a participant and/or driver to obey all laws and posted signs.
- Transportation is ONLY provided for the first runner to the start. All other runners will need to utilize a vehicle provided by your team. All vehicle operational costs incurred are the responsibility of your team and not Runtastic Events.
- Do NOT lose your keys! (We suggest adding a tracking device.)
- Please wear your team’s assigned numbers and bibs, and make sure they are visible whenever you are outside your vehicle and on the course.
- Please be aware of other teams in the exchange zones. Keep it clean and controlled with a friendly, competitive spirit.
- Interference with another team will result in disqualification.
- Runtastic Events LLC reserves the right to disqualify any team or individual who is not abiding by any safety rules or laws.
- Chip timing is required, and you must wear the assigned apparatus for the relay. Marathoners will use the chip on the back of the bib.
- The time limit for the marathon course is 6 hours and 30 minutes. The last pacer (sweeper) will signify to the aid stations, officers, and course workers that they can proceed with cleaning up. If you take longer, you may be leap-frogged or on the course without support.
- “No Time Penalty” is a reference to no additional finishing time added for elevation loss for those trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon, and does not apply to course time limits.
- Please clean up and take care of your team’s garbage.
- Team disqualification can occur for:
- Missed exchange zone
- Course cutting
- Unsportsmanlike conduct
- Not wearing a visible team bib
